Over the summer, Michelle and I rode in the Lupus Wolfride Gran Fondo for 56 miles around Columbia, IL to  create awareness around lupus and generate support around the disease. This was the first time I’ve done the ride, and holds a lot of meaning for me, as my mother suffers from lupus.

Lupus is an autoimmune disease where the immune system essentially attacks itself. My mother is constantly in pain and has to be very careful to avoid stress, sun exposure, and infection, all of which are symptoms of lupus and aggravate the disease. The cause of lupus is unknown, however hormones, genetics, and environment are potentially involved, which is why support around lupus research and finding a cure is so important.

There are a lot of causes to support, but on a personal level, lupus is something I feel passionate about generating awareness for. More research can not only help the development of better medications, but also prevent future generations from living with this disease.
