What does happiness mean to you?

Happiness to me is a mindset. It’s a combination of self-awareness, clarity, trust, and community. When I am present where I am, where I want to go and what I need. I’m happiest when I take care of myself, both physically and mentally.  Each day gives moments where I take a few deep breaths and feel the world around me.  During these moments, I know I am exactly where I need to be. I know I’m suspended, free from being pulled in many directions by the demands of life. Happiness to me is also linked to gratitude, for myself, for others and for the opportunity to create any life I choose.

What are you in the practice of?

Compassion toward myself.  I’ve always held myself to such a high standard, especially when it comes to my work. I can recall instances over the last few years where I have made mistakes (big and small) and held onto them for WEEKS. I’d let the guilt or shame over that thing I did (or didn’t do) trickle into other areas of my life until I felt like I was failing at everything.

What I didn’t always realize was that lacking compassion for myself held me back. At times it paralyzed my performance or made me obsess over every detail in fear of letting anything slip through the cracks. My work is in the recovery. Remembering that mistakes do not define me, they are what I did, they are my guide to viewing the answers to a better life. Recognizing the quest for perfectionism is exhausting and limiting. The secret is owning my mistakes in the moment and loving myself anyways.

Where do you live? What do you most love about your community?

I live in Lafayette Square. Aside from the convenience of location, I love the character, history and small businesses this neighborhood has to offer. I love Park Avenue Coffee, Lafayette Park, and the countless restaurants in walking distance of my apartment. It’s also quiet and safe.

What do you do to stay motivated?

I read, listen to audiobooks and explore podcasts every day – mostly on self-development. Brene Brown and Brooke Castillo are two of my favorites.

I’ve also built a community of strong and inspiring people who are always in the work of growing. We share perspective, support each other and are a constant reminder of what is possible.

How do you stay active?

I love variety! Mostly Barre, CrossFit, and yoga. On days I can’t make it to class/training, I run or lift weights. When the weather’s nice, I tie my workouts into exploring the city: running stairs at the arch, rollerblading at Creve Couer Lake, hiking Castlewood or running Forest Park.

Tell us a secret.

I think Chick-Fil-A has the best ice cream in St. Louis. I’ve tried them all. Out of all the variety, the ice dream cone prevails.
